2021 Clinical TMS Society PULSES Scholarships Awarded

The scholarships have been awarded for the upcoming PULSES course in West Palm Beach!!  The PULSES course is a two-day didactic and hands-on training, including topics on TMS history, clinical basics/research, extending, tapering, and re-introduction of TMS, Insurance and financial matters, FDA indications for TMS, seizures, and emerging areas of TMS use.  Five scholarships were given for attendance at the meeting free of registration fees.  To apply, the applicant must complete an application, write a personal statement, and have a letter of verification or good standing from a supervisor, medical school dean, clerkship director, or other program directors.  A sub-committee of the Education Committee then reviews the applications.   Many excellent applications were received this year with very competitive training and skills. We received applications from psychiatry residents, child fellows, research coordinators, physician assistants, family nurse practitioners, TMS clinical researchers, TMS technicians, a student in a PsyD program, and fourth-year medical students.  Applications were received from the Dominican Republic, the United States, and Puerto Rico.

We are pleased to announce this year's winners are Anthony Purgianto, Christy Duan, Eric Goldwaser, Ethan Ashley, and Hanae Komatsu Hidaka!  Anthony Purgianto is from Coralville, IA, and is a resident at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  He is involved in  2 clinical TMS research projects involving  TMS in methamphetamine use and a study of cerebellar TMS in Autism, Bipolar, and Schizophrenia.     Christy Duan is a child fellow graduating in 2021 from Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.  She speaks English, Mandarin Chinese, French, and Spanish. She is a health care writer with multiple publications,  has done many speaking engagements including the APA and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and has won many academic awards/scholarships.    Eric Luria Goldwaser, D.O., PhD. is from Cockeysville, Maryland, and is part of the Physician Scientist Training Program at the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt Psychiatry Residency Program.  He is a PGY3 resident.  He already has had 22 peer-reviewed publications and has developed a research protocol on blood barrier integrity using neuroimaging.  Ethan Ashley is a fourth-year resident at the Medical University of South Carolina.  He graduated medical school from Texas A&M University.  During his stay at MUSC he has trained with Dr. Mark George, Dr. Suzanne Kerns, Dr. Baron Short, and Dr. AJ Manett.  Hanae Komatsu Hidaka is a TMS technician at the Nina Institute of Clinical Neurosciences in the Dominican Republic.  She is working with the only TMS machine in the whole country of the Dominican Republic! 

Congratulations to all of our recipients!  Future PULSES courses are scheduled to occur in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 11-12, 2021, and in Chicago, Illinois, May 11-12, 2022.  Scholarship applications for these courses and information on any additional courses can be obtained at the CTMSS web page.
