Leo Chen

PhD, FRANZCP, MBBS

Dr Leo Chen is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist with extensive experience across clinical practice, research and medical education. He is Deputy Director of the Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre, where he leads the Brain Stimulation Lab and the Psychopharmacology Research Units. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University. As the Director of Psychiatry Training at Alfred Health, he plays a leadership and management role in the education and training of 70+ medical doctors in the specialty of psychiatry.

He is passionate about improving the quality and efficacy of treatments for persons living with mental illnesses. He is/has been investigator on numerous clinical trials evaluating pharmaceuticals and brain stimulation techniques. Dr Chen has been invited to present his research at international and local conferences. Recognised as an expert in accelerated rTMS protocols, Dr Chen was recently invited to lead an expert consensus article for the Harvard Review of Psychiatry on the same topic, which testifies to its clinical and academic importance. Dr Chen has reviewed manuscripts for the Tier 1 neuroscience journals: Biological Psychiatry, Brain Stimulation, Cerebral Cortex, Frontiers in Psychiatry and the American Journal of Psychiatry.

At the CTMSS, he serves on the Education Committee and the PULSES TMS Certification Course Committee. Locally in Australia he was an author on the RANZCP’s 2018 Professional Practice Guideline (PPG16) and Position Statement (PS79) on rTMS.
